  5.     DIED. Leo Durocher, 86, combative baseball manager who
  6. piloted two clubs into three World Series and whose hard-boiled
  7. comment about a rival team ("Nice guys. Finish last.") captured
  8. the unforgiving side of American sports; in Palm Springs, Calif.
  9. After a career as a sure-handed shortstop, Durocher became
  10. manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1939 and led them to a
  11. pennant in 1941. Baseball Commissioner Happy Chandler suspended
  12. him for the 1947 season because of incidents the commissioner
  13. construed as "detrimental to baseball." The following summer
  14. Durocher left the Dodgers to manage the New York Giants, and
  15. guided them to a pennant in 1951 and a World Series crown in
  16. 1954. Durocher's enduring image will be his fierce nose-to-nose
  17. jousts with umpires.
